Pulled Pork Dinner, originally uploaded by nichellest.

While riding around Vineyard Haven on Saturday, RKB spotted a sign outside a Baptist church that advertised a pulled pork dinner for $12 from 5-7PM. So after an afternoon nap, the four of us (Rachel, her grandmother, Twanna and I) went over to the church around 6:30PM. There was plenty of food left, and we snagged four seats at the end of the table. Teenagers serve us lemonade with our delicious dinner of pulled pork, cole slaw and sweet potato fries. Rachel took pictures of cupcakes, but I had a nice slice of pecan pie. It was delicious! Who would have thought that the best Southern meal I have had outside of Atlanta this summer would be in New England?

I’m back in New York City and social. I stopped by Yuca last night to meet up with Liza and Twanna. It was great to meet Baratunde, Jose and Tim.

The mango margaritas at Yuca are delicious, but I burned the roof of my mouth on the fish fritters. Patience is a virtue.

Shrimp Burger and Sisters

For my sister’s birthday, we went to Parish, a New Orleans restaurant and market located in Atlanta’s Inman Park neighborhood. I had the catfish, my middle sister had trout and the birthday girl had the shrimp burger pictured above.

Today, I visited Sweet Pockets, a cupcake bakery. I had a Olympis cupcake. Monday, I had a caramel cupcake at A Piece of Cake. (More on that on later when I blog it on CTTC).

After going to see Erin and Her Cello play at Ars Nova, I stopped by NYC Icy on 10th Avenue to enjoy a scoop of caramel ice cream on a sugar cone. It was delicious! I am so glad they re-opened.

BTW, Erin and Cello are playing at Joe’s Pub on Saturday, August 16. She has news songs and a wonderful cover of a Cranberries tune.

If you like to indulge in culture, check out the last performances of Prince Trevor Among The Elephants which is part of the Midtown Theatre Festival. It is a hilarious, epic fairy tale for adults with a little full front nudity!  Chicks and Giggles alum Kelli Nichols is in the play.

hawaiian shaved ice at Eton, originally uploaded by nichellest.

First I will announce this: song titles may not necessarily be the titles of my blog posts. I have do more with SEO (search engine optimization).

Anyway, I stumbled upon a wonderful surprise yesterday evening. As I walking along Sackett Street in Cobble Hill, I saw Eton, this little place that sells Hawaiian shaved ice and savory dumplings. I loved it!

I ordered the pork/beef cabbage dumplings, and they were delicious. Next time, I am going for the chicken mushroom.

There are eighteen flavors to choose for the shaved ice including mango, coconut, and passion fruit. Since it was my first time, I chose strawberry/lemon shaved ice. Then you pick a “topping”. Vanilla ice cream was recommended by the Eton, so I went with it even though I was duboius of the taste. Actually the “topping” is actually a “bottoming” since it is put in the cute flowerpot containers first before the shaved ice. The end result is like a creamsicle.

4th of july hat-nichelle, originally uploaded by nichellest.

I survived three 4th of July parties with only a few bruises from the plastic chair debacle.

Saturday was hangover brunch followed by a nap and then one 5th of July party where I learned a lot about allergies from a doctor who golfs and takes lots of cabs.

Today, I made a small batch of strawberry chicken salad.  This afternoon, I may go see The Wackness. I hope it is not wack.

Strawberry Wine

Yesterday, I attended the Top Berry Luncheon hosted by the California Strawberry Commission. Lunch as prepared by Top Chef’s CJ and it was delicious. First we had a strawberry sensory tasting which involved eating strawberries with savory items like balsamic vinegar, radicchio and jalepenos. Then we watched as CJ prepared braised lamb chop with a strawberry gastrique.

For dessert, there was a goat cheese tart with strawberry and walnut.

The “no booze diet” is not gonna work for me because I am way too social and plus I like a good drink. The solution came to me today when I met David Wales at LikeMind. He gave a card for the Prudent Boozers Society which advocates the “4 floor program”.

  1. savor the 1st drink
  2. sip the 2nd
  3. nurse the third
  4. skip the fourth

Since I often go to several events in one night, my new rule is this. I am only staying for one drink. If I stay longer than one drink, then I have to skip the next event.

Speaking of social, last Friday I went to Ted and Amy Supper Club hosted by Kara. Alex took loads of pictures and I can be really intense when playing Connect Four.
