New WOrd: Manesia

One of my favorite podcasts is Who? Weekly, a celebrity podcast. They often talk about “face blindness” which is when an actor resembles other actors and causes confusion. Well, “face blindness” is similar to a term I coined years ago.

Friends typically create a shorthand language either by body language or by words or even sounds that express so much with so little. At some point, I was going to catalog my squad’s dictionary, but I quit after this one word- Manesia. Manesia is a funny portmanteau combining man and amnesia.

Though I created the term years ago, there’s a meme that popped up last year that perfectly sums up what manesia. When Keke Palmer did the Vanity Fair and didn’t recognize Dick Chaney, she inadvertently started the meme, “Sorry To This Man“.

Manesia (noun) — forgetting who a man is even if you have been introduced before to him several times. This happens mainly because men tend to dress similarly in a uniform of untucked striped shirts, jeans, and New Balance sneakers. Also, there is not a lot of diversity of facial hair or haircut style, so it may be difficult to differentiate one guy from others. Women primarily get manesia, but this condition can affect both men and women. A good way to combat manesia is for more men to obtain a personality, be charming and gracious. European accents help as well.

Chicken, Chicken

It’s high Leo season. This week is my mom’s, my sister’s and my aunt’s birthdays. My birthday isn’t until November, but I have to skip it. This is not a great year for celebrations and gatherings.

Anyway, I cooked some chicken on Saturday. This morning, I cooked some onion and garlic hotdogs that I got from 920 Cattle & Company. They’re a farm based in Statesboro and they come down every week to sell at Forsyth Farmers’ Market.

Recipe: Banoffee Cookies

banoffee cookies

Banoffee is a British thing. A banoffee pie is an English dessert pie made from bananas, cream and toffee. I have never had banoffee pie but I created a recipe for banoffee spice cookies. These cookies are great for breakfast with a cup of coffee.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2 bananas ripe
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 2 cups flour
  • pinch salt
  • 1/2 cup toffee chips
  • 1/2 tsp cardamom
  • 1 tsp apple pie spice

Instructions

  • Cream together butter and sugar into mixing bowl until fluffy. Add in the egg.
  • Using two ripe bananas, I mashed them up with baking soda.
  • In a separate bowl, mix the flour with the apple pie spice, cardamon and a salt.
  • Then add the dry ingredients slowly until well mixed.
  • Stir in the toffee chips.
  • Drop in dollops onto a parchment paper or foil-lined baking sheet.
  • Bake for 11-13 minutes or until the edges are golden brown.
  • Cool completely on a wire rack.

This recipe was originally posted by me on Cookpad in 2014. I am in the processed of bringing my content to my site.

More ProTected By Blue than White

Did Daniel Holtzclaw think he was more protected by blue or white? It’s troubling to me. I know that people are capable of doing evil. I know that some people don’t respect other people’s humanity. I know people do bad things and never feel guilt. However, I don’t know how Daniel Holtzclaw thought he could get away with being a serial rapist.

Did he think that his fellow police officers would protect him?

Is the “Blue Wall” that impenetrable? Maybe. The fact is that police officers who have shot and killed people are rarely charged. If they are charged, they are not usually found guilty.

Or did Daniel Holtzclaw think he was protected by his whiteness? He’s not white. He’s a model minority. He’s half-Asian, but in Oklahoma City, it may be white enough. If other white police officers can get away with shooting unarmed African American men, then surely Daniel with his “white realness” can get away with raping and assaulting defenseless African-American women?

Well today, it looks like Daniel Holtzclaw was not shielded by blue or white. He was found guilty on 18 counts. The story is not over. His sentence may be light. He may get an appeal. There’s no rush to celebrate.

Toni Morrison said that “racism is a distraction”. Imani Perry called racism extremely exhausting. It is both those things and more. It’s a systemic disregard and disrespect for a specific group of people. It is a negation of their humanity. I hope that the women who were raped and assaulted by Daniel Holtzclaw can feel their humanity again because of the verdict.

End Of July

Today I hit publish on another issue of Nichelle Newsletter. Please take a moment to read.

There’s been no Christmas in July. Civil rights leader and representative John Lewis passed away. He means so much to the people of Atlanta and Selma, Alabama. He was Obama’s hero. It’s sad. His colleagues in Washington should do everything to restore the Voting Rights Act to its full strength.

This past week, I have been listening to Jenifer Lewis‘ memoir, The Mother of Black Hollywood. It was so good to hear her narration. I am looking to find another book that I will enjoy on Audible.com

I have been posting a lot of photos on Instagram and I have been enjoying taking photos around Savannah. Follow me on Instagram.

Moonshine and Comedy

Yesterday, I sipped some moonshine while sitting outside with my friends We were swarmed by flies and mosquitoes, but talking to people in person is nice.

Today, I am focused on promoting and working on the comedy show. Comedy @ The Starland Yard is a comedy show that I started producing in December. We did three shows, and have been on hiatus since March. It’s coming back on July 23rd. I hope to bring some laughs to Savannah. Today, I am doing research online to buy the best equipment for the show. I need a PA speaker, two mics and a mic stand. Hopefully, I don’t have to spend more than $180 on the equipment. I talked to my Dad, and he’s doing well. My mom is watching Castle & Castle on Netflix. My four year old nephew does a great impersonation of a dinosaur.

Also, the latest issue of Nichelle Newsletter is up.

June 1st: New Month, Still Covid

“My color is a joy, not a burden. ” It’s a quote I got from a book and it is one of my mantras. I tweet it out every afternoon. The tweet is for me not for anyone else, but it’s great someone likes it.
