Ten Things Every Woman Should Follow So They Can Lead

Earlier this week, I was asked “What are the ten most important thing women, 18 to 34, need to know about to remain culturally relevant.”  I thought about it and here is my list in no particular order. Add your ideas in the comments.

  1. Economic Independence: Know that they can pursue their dreams and not starve.
  2. Reproductive Rights: Be aware of how that the President appoints judges to the Supreme Court and that reproductive laws can vary from state to state.
  3. Being comfortable with your sexuality: whether you are a serial dater, married, single, lesbian, bisexual. Practicing abstinence counts, too.
  4. Communicate effectively with grace and like a grown-up. Showing humility with others and stop the baby talk.
  5. Read about the world both locally and globally: read books, newspapers, magazines and online media.  Know what is going on in the world around you.
  6. Green your life: Be aware of you can be green.  More than recycling.  It is about using less.
  7. Being fit: Start now with healthy habits. Walking, running, yoga, going to the gym.
  8. Enjoy food: Grown your own. Cook your own meals.
  9. Accept yourself: Be confident about your mind and body. Appreciate your mental quirks and physical being.
  10. Develop your own personal style: Know what colors and clothes fits your personality and body.

Feast on This

The things that make a great conference is learning new things, meeting cool people and not feeling overwhelmed with both.  Today I went to All Day Buffet’s The Feast at The Scandinavian House.

Presentations included:

  • Vertical Farming by Columbia Professor Dickson Despommier
  • Making Garbage a positive commodity by Terracycle’s Tom Szaky
  • World traveler and organic soap maker Josh Onysko, founder of Pangea Organics.
  • New Orleans as a Social Innovation Laboratory by Robbie Vitrano of Trumpet. In his presentation, he had one of the best Don Draper references, “Everyday I do God’s work, which is advertising”.
  • Social Design  and Social Impact with Elizabeth Johansen from Ideo.
  • Organizing Ideas with Scott Belsky of Behance.
  • I miss Play Pumps but they bring water pumps to Africa
  • Piers from PSFK talked about creators, communities and companies.
  • If We Ran It by Michael Romanowicz and Marissa Shrum. Daylighting. Slashers. It’s a look at how young  people have an interdisciplinary approach toward career and work.
  • Fame Theory by Jose Serrano-Reyes and Seth Aylmer. Using data to steer social capital.
  • Chad Rea of EcoPop who challenged everyone to do the opposite of what they are currently doing.

Read This: The Decline Of Men

Last Friday, I stopped by the book party for Guy Garcia’s new book, The Decline of Men: How The American Male is Tuning Out, Giving Up, and Flipping Off His Future.

This book is really interesting with a mix of anecdotes, biology, statistics, and recent pop culture references. It is a critical of men in America today. I hope the Y-chromosome survives. Even though, I sometimes suffer from manesia, I think men are kinda super.

Baked Book Party and FreshDirect Event

Tonight, I went to the book party for Baked at PowerHouse Arena in DUMBO. Matt Lewis and Renato Poliafito, the owners of Baked in Red Hook, have written their first cookbook,  Baked: New Frontiers in Baking, which is full of delicious recipes for cakes, brownies, whoopie pies and cupcakes. The Chocolate Malted cupcakes pictured above are so yummy!

Artisanal Cheese and Wine At USQ

Before going to the Baked event, I stopped by the FreshDirect event at Union Square Wine and Spirits.  The event was to promote the FreshDirect’s new online wine store partnership With USQ Wine Store.  There was cheese and wine pairings, sake with edamame,  a few Spanish wines and a really spicy ginger cocktail made with Canton.  I especially liked the Llopart Rose Brut Cava so I may get some for the holidays since they will be here soon.  At the event, I met a couple of writers from Crain’s,  a very cool former model who is a foodie, and actress Robin Mattson who played Heather on General Hospital back in the day. Plus, I talked to fellow foodbuzz blogger Miss Ginsu and the very nice publicists at MWW.

WordCamp New York: How I Spent My Sunday

“We’re taking the “W” back this year” said Matt Mullenweg of WordPress.  Despite the fact it was a rainy Sunday, I went to Sun Microsystems office’s near Grand Central to attend Word Camp New York.  The room where Word Camp was held packed with people who crossed the wide spectrum of blogging. Some were old skool and there were a few who just started out. There were tech bloggers, non-profit bloggers, corporate bloggers and personal bloggers.

There was a lot of information given out today, so I just note the highlights.

  • The next version of WordPress (2.7) will be released in November 2008.
  • 2009 will be the Year of Themes
  • Buddy Press, social networking plug-in for WordPress blog is coming.
  • Aaron Brazell of Technosailor gave a talk about growing your blog. You can check out his presentation, “Making it To The Big Leagues”.
  • There was a presentation on Kaltura, an open source video platform.
  • Jeremy Clarke of Global Voices gave a presentation on how to protect your site from hacks, and to be efficient by using plug-ins.

I didn’t stay for the end, but I learned a lot in a short amount of time.  I also ran into Marshall, Margaret, Jane, Sanford, and Janera.

A couple of weeks, the three of us went over to Brooklyn Hilary for a photo shoot. We didn’t have press photos, so I thought it would be a good idea. It was so much fun. We took a lot photos!

It’s Advertising Week, so I know Don Draper and the guys from Sterling Cooper will be out having cocktails and cozying up to new clients.(Ha!)

There are other things going this week including the Biddies on Monday and Neal Medlyn’s Kanye West show on Thursday.

Quirky Circus: Expect weirdness on Tuesday night at the Gershwin Hotel. Armitage Shanks, Zero Boy, Lady Rizo and Coney Island Sideshow folks. $10, 8PM

The Alcoholic: Jonathan Ames animated may seem redundant or ironic depending on when you catch him, but he’s doing a reading of new graphic novel this Wednesday at Book Court in Brooklyn at 7PM.

Cause For Drinks: Also on Wednesday, you can drink and give to a good cause at All Day Buffet’s happy hour at Gallery Bar.  BTW, are you going to The Feast Conference on October 16? I am.

Martha Stewart Blogging Show, originally uploaded by nichellest.

Wednesday, I attended the taping of a very special Martha Stewart show. It was an all blogger show and everyone in the audience were bloggers. My Dell laptop battery lasted about 30 minutes so I couldn’t live blog/twitter the whole show, but it was fun. Martha Stewart and HP kindly gave away All-In-One Printers to everyone in the audience. I can’t wait to get mine in a few weeks!

Wednesday evening, Cupcakes Take The Cake had a Cupcake Social at The Delancey. There were so many cupcakes, that I don’t think I can eat any for the next week.

Friday was LikeMind, and after that I met with the founders of SmartyPig. I stopped by the OMMA Expo Hall, and met Barbi from Kontera.  In the evening I went to the Montauk Club in Park Slope to celebrate Eric’s birthday. I had two delicious Key Lime Martinis and chatted with friends. Today I feel a little anti-social so I’m staying close to home tonight.
